The two recorded albums, The Jazz Soul of Little Stevie and Tribute to Uncle Ray were released in September and October of 1962, respectively, and a recording of a 23-minute performance by Little Stevie from his first tour was released as the live album The 12 Year Old Genius early in 1963. Little Stevie went on his first tour in 1962 at 12 years old, and his début single " I Call It Pretty Music, But the Old People Call It The Blues" was also released that summer. They worked on an album which consisted mostly of Ray Charles covers and another which consisted of instrumental tracks. He was signed to the label and given the nickname "Little Stevie Wonder".įor his first few albums, he worked with songwriter and producer Clarence Paul. The song was never recorded, but Ronnie White took Stevie and his mother to an audition at Motown Records. He wrote his first original song in 1961 at the age of 11, which he sang to Ronnie White, co-founder of The Miracles. By the age of ten, he had already learned to play the harmonica, drums, and piano. Stevie and his childhood friend John Glover occasionally performed on street corners, dubbing themselves "Stevie & John". When she later remarried, Stevie took her new husband's last name, Morris. His mother divorced his father when Stevie was four and moved all six children to Detroit. His mother was songwriter Lula Mae Hardaway and his father was Calvin Judkins. Stevie Wonder was born in Saginaw, Michigan as Stevland Hardaway Judkins, the third of six children.
